A Day of Fun and Fishing for Local Service Men and Women

Kings Park resident resident Mark Garry and St. James residents Roger Smith and Skip Hein spearhead third annual Soldiers on the Sound.

25 boats and 40 active service men and women of Westhampton's 106th Rescue Squadron filled the Smithtown Yacht Club Marina on Saturday to participate in the third annual Solders on the Sound.

The event allows military men, women and their families to spend the day fishing and enjoy a day on the water. While many were able to attend, several of those who planned on attending were unable due to their redeployment to Afghanistan.

The event, which is in it's third year, is designed to show community gratitude for those who serve in the military. It was the brainchild of Kings Park resident Mark Garry and St. James residents Roger Smith and Skip Hein.

Michele Sisino-Garry, Nassau County Police Officer from Kings Park, spoke of the origin of the event.

"My husband Mark and fishing captain Roger(Smith) wanted to show appreciation and gratitude to the military. Skip Hein knew many of the soldiers at the 106th so he made the connections. But the day is not only for the service people but for their families who also make huge sacrifices," she said.

"These guys are thrilled to be asked" said Smith."They often say whenever we get invited to do things like this there is a trade off...we are expected to do something in return. The Smithtown Yacht Club asks for nothing in return, except maybe some good sized fish!"

Rich Gerry, who has served in the military for 29 years, says it is a great time.

"A grand slam...great fishing, great fun. Just a great day."

Upon return from their morning outing participants enjoyed a  barbeque and free live music. All food and raffle prizes are donated by local merchants and yacht club members. Military men, their families and the volunteers yacht club members eat together and enjoy the afternoon together.

"It is a give back day," said Sisino-Gary. "Giving them a day of fun and festivities where they can completely forget their serious responsibilities within the military."
