Remembering and Sharing the Life of Minnie

Minnie Halufska of Kings Park may have passed on almost 10 years ago, but her spirit lives on in her children, grandchildren and extended family members.

Reader Phyllis Stein shares with us how a family remembers and celebrates a life of a loved one who has passed on.

To celebrate Minnie’s life and love of her family, daughters Donna Casey of New London, Conn., and Paula Taylor of Ayer, Mass, met “our other sister” Phyllis Stein of Hauppauge at the Orient Point Ferry on Minnie’s birthday (August 23) to spend the day celebrating and reminiscing about Minnie and also about growing up in Kings Park.

Following a luncheon in the area where they toasted Minnie with glasses of lemonade, “the daughters” went for a ride on the Greenport Carousel where Donna was able to reach out and retrieve the brass rings while astride the silver horse that was going up and down the carousel! It was during this time that the earthquake hit the Long Island area, but it was never felt the earthquake as it happened “while we were going in circles on or next to our steeds” and moving on the merry-go-round.

Following the ride, they did a little bit of browsing and purchasing in the local shops before heading back to the Orient Point Ferry for their ride home.

“Yup, this is exactly the kind of birthday party that Ma would have loved and totally enjoyed being at!" said Paula.
