Sunday mornings in Kings Park mean business for local farmers and fresh produce for community members at the weekly Kings Park Farmers Market on Main Street.
Every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. since June 24, local farmers set up shop in the municipal parking lot across from the fire department to display their wide variety of produce and goods. Many people make it a point to attend each week, either sampling or purchasing not only produce from stands, but also various goods, such as coffees, pastries and breads.
Farmers like Teddy Bolkas from Thera Farms have become friendly with local customers, saying he sees a lot of the same people every week.
“The people are awesome here at the market,” said Bolkas. “The community is very involved, and it’s a nice feeling."
Bolkas’ three acre farm, is located on Motor Parkway in Ronkonkoma and is certified organic. They are known for their heirloom tomatoes and figs.
“We are trying to introduce people to different things other than the regular supermarket vegetables and fruits,” Bolkas said.
A couple stands down is another family-friendly farm stand, Finks Country Farm, from Wading River. Michelle Fink, co-owner of the farm along with her husband, explained the reason she enjoys the farmers market is mainly because of the community and people that attend.
“We love the people who come to the market,” said Fink. “The market in August is especially good for customers, it’s the heart of fruits and vegetables.”
The Kings Park Farmers Market is held each Sunday in the municpal lot on Main Street in Kings Park and runs every Sunday through the end of the summer until mid-November from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.. The market is made possible through Kings Park Civic Association and Friends & Farmers Inc.
