Patch Picks: Non-Profits Making A Difference

Our weekly guide of things to do and places to go in Kings Park. This week, we highlight some local non-profits doing amazing work for the community.

: Harry Chapin founded his namesake charity organization in 1980. Now more than 30 years later, Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank is still helping the hungry get fed.

: More than 400 families are fed a meal each year at the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry. Spearheaded by a number of churches putting aside any differing beliefs, the pantry hands out 12,500 meals yearly.

: In 1992, Linda Breitstone discovered that convenience store food is often thrown away at the end of the day, rather than given to a food kitchen for distribution to the needy. 19 years later, Island Harvest has built a solid network of relationships that ensures food is never wasted.

Project HEAL: Eating disorders are some of the most dangerous problems a teen can develop. With that in mind, Liana Rosenman, Kristina Saffran, and Becky Allen started Project HEAl (Help to Eat, Accept and Live). It aims to raise money to aid those suffering from eating disorders and destroy what society perceives is the ideal image of the female body.

Guide Dog Foundation For The Blind, Inc.: Thanks to the Guide Dog Foundation, the blind are given a loving and caring canine friend to help them see. The Foundation also has aided hearing-impaired blind people and physically challenged. All free of charge.
