Our weekly guide of things to do and places to go in Kings Park. This week, we highlight great reads recommended by librarians.

This week kicks off Read Across America, a day inspired by Dr. Seuss to encourage children and their caregivers to read more and to read everyday. Below are some favorite picks from our local librarian, as well as a few picks by your Patch editor.

Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead
Not just a book about a local spot, but in 2011, it's the book for Long Islanders to read. That's because its been selected as the 2011 Long Island Reads pick. Whitehead will be visiting the Plainview-Old Bethpage library on April 14 at 7:30 p.m. A week earlier on the 7th, a bus trip to Sag Harbor will give you a first-hand look at the namesake town.

Despite the advances of science, cancer still evades a cure. The Emperor Of All Maladies: A Biography Of Cancer looks at the history of cancer research and attempts to eradicate the disease, from the first chemotherapy treatment to modern-day advances.

The Boy Who Grew Flowers by Jean Wojitowitz

Meet a boy named Rink who lives on top of Lonesome Mountain and is a little different than some of the other kids in school. This book will help your child appreciate the differences in the people around them.

Another book you'll have a hard time finding just sitting on a shelf at the library, The Help focuses on the stories and struggles of black domestic workers in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights movement.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Parents--want to have something to talk to your kids about? Take a read through the Hunger Games Trilogy, about a future where representatives from each country to battle to the death. And the trilogy will be hitting the big screen starting next year.
