Local Businessman Contributes to Kings Park Scholarships

Robert Cartelli, owner of Cartelli's Plumbing and Heating, believes education is important.

For the last couple of years, Robert Cartelli of Cartelli’s Plumbing and Heating has contributed to scholarships for Kings Park high school seniors. He’s honored to be part of the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce scholarship committee.

“I’m a big advocate of education,” said Cartelli.

The business owner made a contribution of $1,000 to the scholarships and helps decide which students will receive the awards. On Wednesday, June 1, four local students will receive a $1,000 scholarship each at a luncheon at the Kings Park VFW Hall. The owners of Kings Park Physical Therapy and the law offices of Sullivan & Kehoe have also contributed this year.

Cartelli said the committee received a large number of applications in 2011 and met a few times in order to decide who will receive the scholarships. He said this year it was difficult to choose.

The business owner said academic achievement as well as after school activities are reviewed. The committee also takes into consideration if a student volunteers or works a part-time job. Cartelli was extremely impressed by the applicants this year.

“Someone is doing a great job with these kids,” he said.

Cartelli believes that education plays a very important role in everyone’s life. When he was younger he thought of becoming a dentist; however, ten years ago he took over the family business when his father moved to Florida.

Cartelli’s Plumbing and Heating has been operating for over 50 years. He said it was a side business for his father, but Cartelli has made it a full-time occupation.

The long-time Kings Park resident has been busier than usual this past year. In addition to running a business, he has an infant son who will turn one in a few weeks. Even with his busy schedule, he tries to keep active in the community.

Cartelli is already planning on being part of the scholarship committee next year. He said the group would like to award five scholarships of $1,000 each in 2012 and is asking the community for any fundraising ideas to reach their goal.

Looking forward to Wednesday’s event, Cartelli said, “I get a real sense of fulfillment.”
