Update: Landing Avenue Bridge Work Begins End of July

Bridge will be closed to traffic in July for an estimated three-weeks.

Update: According to Suffolk County Spokeswoman Vanessa Baird-Streeter, the work will now begin on July 24, not the end of June as originally stated. The bridge will closed to traffic, 24-hours a day for three-weeks beginning July 24.

Three-months of construction work on the Landing Avenue Bridge in Smithtown is slated to begin by month's end and will result in a three-week closure for part of July.

According to Suffolk County Spokeswoman Vanessa Baird-Streeter, the project will address concrete that is lose or falling onto the structural surface of the deck and underside of the bridge.

“It is a rehabilitation project, not a replacement,” she said.

Baird said the existing structure is safe and that the work is part of normal maintenance.

The cost of the project is $80,000, down from the $125,000 that officials originally stated.

The work, according to Baird, should take about three months. The bridge will be closed for part of that time beginning around July 24 for about two to three- weeks.

Baird said the Department of Public Works has not finalized a detour plan yet, but plans to release the route closer to the bridge closing date.
