Event Spotlight: Garage Sale Fundraiser

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Kings Park, will hold a yard sale to help a Kings Parker in need.

On August 6, from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 35 Ashland Drive, Kings Park, The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Ave Maria #832 will be holding a fundraiser yard sale to benefit fellow member and long time Kings Park resident, Susan Riebe.

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas is one of the oldest and largest organizations of Catholic women in the Americas. The Kings Park court was established in 1923.

“It’s a charitable organization,” explains regent Patricia Ziegler, “and Susan has been an active member for over three years.”

“Susan, who is presently recording secretary, started our Ave Maria Welcoming Angels Committee,” says Ziegler. “Angels, veteran members, act as buddies for newer members, explaining all about our work with the food pantry, packages for soldiers, items for Little Flower Children’s Residential Center, and more.”

“All the members love Susan,” Ziegler continues. “She is outgoing and bubbly and she needs our help now.”

“Susan recently underwent a [below the knee] amputation resulting from complications of diabetes and the medical bills are very high,” explains Ziegler.

In the past five months, Riebe has undergone seven surgeries.

“I use to be the caregiver,” Riebe explains. “I was a nurse for over thirty five years. I’m not used to being on the receiving end.”

Diagnosed with diabetes at age forty one, Riebe had to stop working four years ago due to the illness. “It has been a mixed blessing,” she explains. “I didn’t think I would have any help, but the generosity of spirit of the people behind Catholic Daughters has been overwhelming.”

“The outpouring of love, caring and support from The Catholic Daughters and the whole community has been unexpected,” Riebe reveals. “I owe them my life.”

“I look forward to moving on,” Riebe says, “so I can help others.”
