Dr. Kaplan delighted in his patients and had an old fashioned way of connecting with people. “My father was a gentle soul. His nickname was Cream Puff Bob,” said his youngest daughter Amy Pincus.

In his off hours, Dr. Kaplan was a hobbyist, builder and engineer. He built appliances, recreational vehicles, radios, even a Bradley GT sports car.  He earned his private pilot’s license in 1973 and was eventually licensed as a commercial pilot. He loved soaring over the east end of Long Island and beyond.

Dr. Kaplan was a lousy golfer, but he had endless enthusiasm for the sport. He could hit a tree at 300 yards!  He played tennis most of his life, and was also an avid boater and an excellent musician. He studied clarinet with Lawrence Sobol for many years after retiring from medicine. To his last days, just holding his clarinet brought him joy.

Dr. Kaplan is survived by his wife Edith and their three daughters, Debra, Lisa and Amy, their husbands and four grandchildren.
