Transformer Fire Shuts Schools in Kings Park

Loss of power in two buildings forces cancellation of classes Wednesday.

Only one day after a six day closure, schools in Kings Park were closed again on Wednesday due to a loss of power at two of the district's buildings as the result of a transformer fire.

According to Kings Park Fire Cheif, Mark O'Brien, the fire occurred at Kohr Road and Broadview Avenue and caused a loss of power in RJO Intermediate and William T. Rogers Middle School.

Susan Agruso, district superintendent, said power is back on in both buildings.

"We can't just close those schools," said Agruso, "it wreaks havoc with the bus schedule. We have to close all schools."

Wednesday's nor'easter was also on the minds of school officials, who believed, given the circumstances, it was better to close.

School is on for Thursday as of now, barring any problems from Wednesday's storm. "We are hoping high winds don't take the power lines down. Based on the condition we are in right now, schools will open," said Agruso.

If schools do close, Agruso said parents would be notified by 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
